Funny true story

Postby tropical_plague » Fri Dec 25, 2015 10:30 am

So some of you may know that my dad's dad, my grandfather, is a big mystery; he sort of disappeared from my dad and grandmother in 1940. His name was Philip Cohen and not much more was known about him. My grandmother quickly married another dude, Norman Haber, and my dad was renamed from Harvey Cohen to Harvey Haber.

No one knew what became of Philip. The only clues I ever got were from my aunt Addie, my grandmother's younger sister, who told me shortly before she died at 91 that she had heard that Phil had split Los Angeles for Maryland in 1940, following some broad.

So the funny bit of this story is that today I was listening to Pandora and on comes "Dream a Little Dream of Me" by Mama Cass Elliot. Cass Elliot bore a strong resemblance to my younger sister.

I was curious to know what age Cass had died at so I checked her out on Wikipedia, and I saw that she was born in 1941 and her original name was Ellen Cohen. Born in Maryland. To some dude named Philip Cohen.

That is a little too coincidental... most likely, then, you are blood related to her. ;)

My father found out at 78 years old that his father was not his real father, no rich famous people in our family tree tho. I'm starting to realize what people used to do with their spare time seeing they had no tv.....

Yeah.

My dad found out when he was 15. He was on trial for voyeurism and they referred to his dad as his father by adoption... somehow they had failed to destroy all the records of Phil's existence even thought they'd had fake birth certificates and marriage certs and stuff made...

Anyway he said that no one said a word on the drive home from the courthouse...

That is quite a story. Your family's ties to famous people seems never-ending.

Yeah, it's weird. It's a function of coming from California. But it's a bit more extreme than average.
